For my office door, I wanted something that looked more like a piece of art than a door. I decided on a barn door. Here is the final result:
And here is how we did it: Instead of painting the actual door, I used a large roll of canvas. My daughter and I painted it with left-over house paint and various brushes. We folded it, stomped on it a few times, and used old brushes to add some detail.
We had lots of fun creating it! The illusion of a running horse at the top was a total accident but we love it. We had our carpenter help with stretching and tacking it onto a regular hollow-core door (ours is 42″ wide).
He also installed the pull on the back side. I didn’t want one on the front so it would look more like art when the door was open). I purchased the hardware from Rusticahardware.com. I had to get one of their mini-systems as the headspace above door was only 5″. Here is a pic of the back of the door, you can see the where the canvas ends.
This is my son checking it out.
The door is quite a conversation piece when we have guests.
What a wonderful idea….looks fab!!!
Thanks for being the first visitor to my blog, Melissa!

I’m so excited about your blog! Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks, Carole!
Martie, this is your blog? Love it!! I remember the awesome front door that you had at your old house. Can’t wait to see more.
Thanks, Ann! Yes, this is my blog. I had so much fun doing the remodel on our new house, I thought it would be cool to put some of the transformations on a blog. The front door at the old house was hard to beat as it was 9′ tall. We did put a pivoting front door on our new house, will do a blog on that one soon. It’s not quite as awesome as we didn’t have the same tall head room. Hope to see you soon! Email or call me if you are in the area.
